This year Portugal has 375 beaches of  "gold quality"

The Algarve appears in the 2nd place of the classification

Quercus, a non-governmental environmental organization, presented the 2019 Gold Quality Beach Award. Among those mentioned are the beaches of the Algarve (87) in second place, behind the Tejo and Oeste region, which includes 90 beaches.

Next comes the North region (74), and the municipalities with the highest number of distinguished beaches are Albufeira and Vila Nova de Gaia (18), followed by Almada and Vila do Bispo (13) and Torres Vedras (12).

According to the organization, 326 are coastal beaches, 40 inland and nine in transition.

The award was created 10 years ago and takes into account mainly the analysis of bathing water, which according to Quercus has been improving in the last four bathing seasons (2014-2017). The analyses carried out in the laboratories of the different Regional Hydrographic Administrations.
